Absolutely none.
The three-year retreatants will be cut off from the world for three-years on a secluded mountaintop in order to focus their minds on how to create lasting peace. At the retreatants’ request, there will be no letters, emails, cell-phones, TV, newspapers, or contact with caretakers supplying reports from the outside world. This would only be a distraction.
During their first three-year retreat (from 2000-2003), Geshe Michael Roach and Lama Christie McNally had not even learned of the events of 9/11 or the War in Iraq until they came out of retreat in June 2003. Their reaction was to travel to New York City and teach Master Shantideva’s practice of Exchanging Self and Others (Dak Shen Nyam Je) and the Patience chapter. Master Shantideva’s name means The Angel of Peace. This made a profound impression on many people, in fact, most of the 2010 3-year retreatants heard this teaching in NYC.
